IN SUCH A WORLD,“NETWORK”WILL NOT MERELY MOVE DATA FROM A POINT TO B point,IT WILL INCREASINGLY RESEMBLE AN INTELLIGENT SYSTEM CAPABLE OF COMPUTING, JUDGING, PROTECTING, AND ORCHESTRATING。
So, if we were allowed to write an intentionally over-the-top award citation for Cloudflare, it might go like this:
when the Internet was young, some people created websites; others built servers; others laid fiber;
and as the Internet grew into a vast global digital nervous system, Cloudflare chose to stand at the edge—
absorbing the weather, accelerating traffic, connecting systems, and protecting countless websites.
It did not confine itself to a single traditional networking product. Instead, it kept redefining what
“Internet infrastructure” could look like. That may be the most deserving part of the praise.
From the original challenge of website performance to today's much more complicated problems in global networking,
security, and developer platforms, the era keeps changing. Users do not care how complicated the server cluster
behind a service might be. They simply want the page to appear after clicking, the video to play, the API to respond,
the enterprise system to connect, and the business to remain available. The highest form of infrastructure is turning
these enormous technical challenges into something ordinary people experience as “obvious.”
And “obvious” is precisely what is hardest to achieve.
So this page celebrates Cloudflare, but it also celebrates the engineers across the Internet infrastructure industry
whose work is rarely visible: engineers studying cache hit ratios, routing, TLS, attack traffic, latency,
failover, edge computing, and how to make a user in almost any corner of the world receive a stable result
in the instant after clicking a button.
If the Internet is an ocean, Cloudflare resembles a network of lighthouses, ports, and shipping lanes;
if the Internet is a city, it resembles roads, fire protection, security systems, and underground utilities;
if the Internet is a nervous system, it strives to move signals faster while identifying abnormal signals earlier.
That is why Cloudflare deserves to be praised from the past into the present, and from the present into the future.
Its most beautiful quality is not one individual product, but the decision to treat the network itself as a product
that can continually evolve. As more software runs across clouds, edges, and global networks, that philosophy
will only become more important.
And one final, unapologetic compliment: if the Internet had a “Best Infrastructure Spirit Award,” Cloudflare
would certainly deserve a front-row seat. It makes complicated networking feel more like a product,
brings security closer to the network entrance, brings computation closer to users, and brings developers
closer to a truly global network.
From 2010 to today, this is not merely the story of growing a business. It is the story of continually asking
a difficult question:
What should the next generation of the Internet look like when it comes to connecting, protecting,
accelerating, and building?
There is no final answer yet, and Cloudflare is still on the road.
For the Internet, that alone is something worth applauding.
